The Doughnuts at Pies & Thighs

I know Pies & Thighs is supposed to be known for having some pretty alright fried chicken in Williamsburg, but they also serve up a small array of doughnuts.

Diana and I grabbed a dirty half dozen to take back to my humble abode for some full-on splurging.  Now I will warn you, these were from her visit a couple months ago, and man, all I can really remember well is my love for one of their particular doughnuts.

The candied ginger grapefruit.  Boy, was this a surprise delight - warmth from the ginger paired with bright, summery notes of citrus.  Moist, dense and delicious.

The pecan was our second favorite, aptly nutty, sweet and crunchy.

The old-fashioned, dusted with cinnamon and sugar, was a dry ol' bore.  Crunchy, yes, but not particularly noteworthy.

I have a serious love/hate affair with Seriouseats, because they usually lead me astray.  Both the cinnamon doughnut and chocolate doughnuts were listed as some of the best doughnuts in NYC, and quite frankly, they really are not.  This midnight black, dense puck also bordered on dry, and lacked the sort of rich chocolate satisfaction one would expect from something as gloriously dark as this.

The filled ones were a bit disappointing also.  Cream-filled and raspberry-filled, from left to right.  While I think Diana was generally okay with the jam-filled one, the cream filled one was a touch too oily (seeped into the cream) to be enjoyable.

So............basically.  Grapefruit ginger it up here!  Or stick to the fried chicken.  (It's alright.)

  2. You two always make doughnuts look better than anyone else does. I LOVE grapefruit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waCF81HdKAA), and I LOVE ginger, so . . . yeah.

  3. I couldn't disagree with you more about the Chocolate cake and the old-fashioned cinnamon doughnut. They where light and cakey with a crisp exterior. These donuts are meant to be eaten with coffee. Not every doughnut is meant to be eaten like a bag of chips, walking down the street. These stack up to Top Pot in Seattle and Voodoo in Portland, Or.

    1. Yeah - maybe coffee would've made a difference, but to each their own! Diana and I much prefer the yeasty delights of Voodoo, so hard to compare cake to yeast, but we're glad you're a doughnut fan!
